Where do I get a free API key?

Pick one provider and create a key there: Google AI Studio (Gemini), Groq or OpenRouter. Then click the AI Writer icon in Chrome's toolbar, choose the same provider, paste the key and press Test connection.

"Rate limit reached": what does it mean?

Free tiers allow a limited number of requests per minute and per day. Wait a minute, or choose a different model in the settings. AI Writer saves tokens by reusing answers for repeated requests, and the popup shows today's usage.

"The model … does not exist"

Providers retire models from time to time. AI Writer switches to an available model automatically. You can also pick one from the Model list in the settings.

I don't see the ✦ button in a text box

It appears when you click into a text box. It's hidden on password, e-mail, phone, OTP, card and search fields, and on sites you switched off in the popup ("Enabled on this site"). Check that "Show AI icon in text fields" is on in the settings.

WhatsApp Web: where are the reply suggestions?

Open a chat and click the small ✨ button at the right of the message box. A green dot on it means suggestions for a new message are ready. Close the bar with ✕ or Esc. Suggestions are never sent automatically: you choose one, edit it if you like, and press Enter.

Is my text or chat stored anywhere?

No. AI Writer has no servers. Text goes only to the AI provider you chose (with your own key) or to LanguageTool for grammar checks, and only when a feature needs it. Codes, passwords, e-mail addresses, links and phone numbers are hidden before chat text is sent. See the privacy policy.

How do I turn off automatic grammar checks?

Open the settings and switch off "Check grammar while typing". You can still check a text on demand from the Grammar tab.

How do updates work?

Chrome updates AI Writer automatically. The new version is applied right away to open tabs, and the settings popup tells you when it has been updated.
